Today, October 1, 2026, Is 'Monhegan Island' Trap Day -- Start Of Their UNIQUE Winter-Only Lobstering Day.
➖➖➖➖➖
From everything I have read & heard this is QUITE the event.
Winter lobstering in Maine is UNIQUE to 'Monhegan Island'.
Over the decades, after many 'lobster wars' with mainland-based lobsterman Monhegan managed to establish an Island-only lobster zone around the island -- & opted just to fish it in the winter. This way they have a better chance of keeping an eye on those that might try to encroach on their 'territorial' waters.
Lobstering in the winter isn't fun!
The number of island lobstermen have gone down over the years.
The last I heard (if I remember correctly) they were down to about 18.
My CONCERN this year is the PRICE of DIESEL!
See the above video.
I am trying, desperately, to get some visibility as to what is happening on the Island.
The drought has been severe & they have a major water shortage.
And diesel prices impact every facet of Island life.
Hence my concern. 😑
