Yes, I had a Green Card for 38-years.
The first one I had was rather special. It did NOT have an expiration date. Honest. I had it for over 17 years. Then I decided I better get a NEW one to avoid any potential hassle at an airport. A few times passport officers had been caught by surprise by it, but they knew it was real.
During all those years, & I travelled extensively in/out of the country for the first fifteen years, I never had any trouble.
I was never asked for it, other than at airports. [I haven't been to Canada by car since 1969 -- & have never been to Mexico.]
I was very used to being on a Green Card.
Deciding to become naturalized was an IMPULSIVE, spur-of-the-moment decision. I hadn't talk to anyone about it or told anyone till well after I applied.
I make these BIG impulsive decisions on average about every 8 years. This was the last one.
I am SO GLAD I did so.
I was processed SUPER QUICKLY. In about 5-months, start-to-finish. Much quicker than I expected.
Today, I am so, so glad. Phew.
I lucked out. 😇
