It is all GOOD until it gets challenged.

That is THE PROBLEM, the issue.

During a sede vacante (i.e., absence of a pope) the cardinals rule but do so precariously. They are explicitly instructed, in the CONSTITUTION, not to make any consequential decisions.

I think they have.

Yes, it will work out as long as there is NO DISSENT down the road.

Yes, it is also TRUE that 'Good Pope' John XXIII in 1958, at his very first cardinal creating consistory blew past the 70 cardinal limit that had stood for 372. Folks will use this as a precedent to justify exceeding the 120 limit.

But as I have pointed out many times before there is a BIG DIFFERENCE.

John XXIII was ALIVE when he made this change (& was able to confirm it, verbally, after he had done it).

This time around there is NO pope.

Francis never spoke of the 120 limit & was NEVER asked about it.

At least ONE senior cardinal should have asked the pope about it. That would have clarified this whole matter.

It is a fait accompli for now. I, however, don't think that this falls into the 'Rome has spoken, the matter is closed'.

I think we will only find out after the conclave. That is the problem.

Well, I am going to stop talking about this now. No point. I have said everything I can. 😇
