Initially I didn't give it much attention. But it always appeared to be there. Very thin and subtle, but definitely a thin ('landing') strip left unshaved.
It was the 1st thing I noticed on his official portrait (left, in image above) this morning. Yes, it was more noticeable at lower magnifications.
I went & looked at a few more images. That strip is always there.
I also noticed he has a small mole above his left lip. That must make shaving problematic. Such moles are easy to nick. So, that might be the reason. He leaves a strip above his lips unshaved to avoid the mole. That could very well be it.
But then again, & I looked, Augustinians, like him, are said to favor facial hair.
The last bearded pope was Innocent XII (reigned 1691-1700).
