I have been volunteering with 'Special Olympics New Hampshire' for 3-years now. This was my 6th event, & the second Area Games that I have volunteered at. At these events I am a 'runner'. NO, I don't run in the races, but I do run from the start line to the finish line before some of the races. Hence the name. What we do is 'athlete escorting' (though they call us 'runners'). We take athletes from the staging area to the start line for their race. But we also have with us the team sheet -- with bib numbers & line assignments -- that the timers need to write in the times and rankings. So once we get the athletes set up in the right lanes we have to run to the finish line to give the timers the team sheet. Hence the name 'runners'. Since we run by the side of the track we can get applause. I did today, multiple times!
It was GREAT FUN. I was there from 7:50am till 2:30pm. I didn't have to stay that long but I wanted to stay till the very end & help out.
It is the volunteering I enjoy the MOST. By far also the MOST REWARDING.
The relay races are at the end too & I like helping out with those. Today I was assigned the 2nd stage -- i.e., take the athletes over to the start of the second leg & make sure that the batons are passed correctly etc. They did great & there were no mix-ups. That was good (even though we tend to give them a lot of latitude).
So, a good day.
I really urge you to support the Special Olympics. A very worthy cause.
😇
