Central New Hampshire (Where I Live) Can Be SHOCKINGLY PROVINCIAL -- Popular Bar That Doesn't Have Brandy (Let Alone Port).
I have lived in Central New Hampshire for TOO LONG -- now close to 40 years.
Yes, I have lived on a dirt road most of that time & have NEVER had city/town water -- always my own well OR a pipe into a lake.
Yes, I have kind of got used to how provincial we are -- THOUGH we have got better over the decades.
Today, I had quite the shock.
I ran out of food. I wasn't planning to go food shopping until tomorrow. A gloomy/rainy day & I again got soaked this morning.
So, I thought I would treat myself to some takeout appetizers.
So, after making my weekly run to the dump, I stopped at a VERY POPULAR, thriving & packed local restaurant/tavern to get the takeout.
Usually, when I order takeout, I go for a quick amble while they get it ready.
Today really was a miserable day. So, I thought I would have a RARE non-wine drink.
I no longer have any liquor in the house.
So, given how wet & cold it was (36F), I thought I would have a GOOD brandy.
I asked them what brandy they had.
After some consultation the lady bartender told me that they DON'T have ANY BRANDY!
She confided that they mainly sell beer & wine. Wow.
NO BRANDY. Not even one bottle. Wow.
I asked he if they have any port. She had NEVER heard of port!
Oh dear!
It is funny.
P.S., This is one of the richest towns in NH -- thanks to all the waterfront mansions.
P.P.S., It is quite well known that I am one of the poorest people in town -- plus one of the very, very, very few non-whites.
