What is it with these so called American 'classics'. Yes, if you look it up I am not alone. It is deemed 'a difficult read' -- the prose verbose & stiff. No kidding.
Then this morning I got to a passage when a Native Indian (called a 'Redskin' in the book) is talking about tides and their 6 hour duration. The story is said to be set in the 1750s. I am pretty sure Native Indians of that time did NOT measure time in hours. I looked it up. I was correct. Hours would have been an alien unit of time in the 1750s -- to the Indians.
Not sure why it is considered a classic.
Keeping on hoping it is going to get better.
Not sure I can slog through if it doesn't. Too painful & I am conscious that I could better spend my time reading a book I enjoy.
The only American classic I have enjoyed is "To Kill A Mockingbird". Yes, of course, written much, much later.
I will try to keep you posted. Wish me luck.
