For the first 32 years of my life, bar 1967-1968 when we lived in 'Buffalo' (NY), I had grown up in countries where 'Boxing Day' was a HOLIDAY.
I was very partial to Boxing Day -- especially the sporting aspects. I would watch the Boxing Day Test match (which alway involved Australia). I still do -- thanks to 'Willow TV'. [I watch at least 20 minutes of cricket, on by BIG TV, every day I am at home.] So the Test match per se is not really an issue. I can still watch that.
What gets me is that it is not a HOLIDAY.
Yes, I appreciate that historically American bosses were loath to lose business/money by having too many holidays or vacation days.
Coming from the U.K. to the U.S., in 1985 (now as a working adult (as opposed to a teenager attending school (as was the case 1967-1968))), I was struck by the paucity of holidays and the miserly amount of vacation days. In the U.K. we had more holidays & I was getting 5 weeks of vacation!
Americans probably never think of it, but there are NO 2-day Holidays in the U.S.
Christmas Day/Boxing Day could be the first.
I am also not used to 'Good Friday' not being a holiday -- never mind 'Easter Monday'. That was a 4-day holiday. I was used to that too.
Even 'Black Friday' isn't a holiday here.
Yes, I realize that more and more Americans have started to get the hang of Boxing Day. Many, of course, if they have the option (& luxury) are taking the day off. So, all of that is good. Doesn't impact me. Everyday of my life is a holiday & I work every day (as I am doing today).
HAPPY BOXING DAY.
