Yes, I am a tad conflicted. This is not like elephant poaching. It was an accident. But, nonetheless, six poor elephants are now dead.
Should a train have been going slower?
Was this an area known for elephant traffic across the tracks? If so should measures have been taken to minimize the chance of an accident.
If there had been any human casualties there would have been much more soul-searching.
Sri Lankans, IMO, are much too cavalier in their treatment these days of our PRECIOUS elephants.
There is a video BUT I don't want to watch it. Just seeing the picture of the grieving elephant by the side of the train is bad enough.
Sri Lankan elephants are so 'human'! Even more so than tamed dogs. Yes, these were elephants in the wild -- but they would still be so gentle and sensitive.
In my 'youth' I had considerable exposure to elephants in Sri Lanka, domesticated and wild. I used to go looking for wild elephants. Sri Lankan wild elephants never scared me.
This is a shame. I am upset.
