Will 'Pope Leo XIV' File A U.S. Tax Return In 2026?

If he is still a U.S. citizen he will be EXPECTED to do so. But is UNLIKELY the IRS could do anything if he doesn't file! He has various immunities up the Yin Yang -- unless he happens to be visiting the U.S. on an official visit.

All American citizens are expected, by Law, to file a U.S. tax return, each year, irrespective of where they are living or how long they have been living outside of the U.S. I think the only 'exemption' they get is that they automatically get a filing extension of 6 months (or so).

The key thing here being IF you are a U.S. citizen.

The pope currently is.

I have heard some talk that his citizenship might be revoked. Find that hard to believe. He is a bona fide citizen by Birth. Hard to take away that type of citizenship -- as opposed to becoming a citizen via naturalization.

Yes, he can renounce his citizenship. Not sure why he would. Will cause quite the stir.

So, if he is a citizen by January 1, 2026, he will be expected to file a 1040.

If he does that would be QUITE THE THING.

Wow.

😇
