This came up, this morning, on my Facebook Timeline.
Cracked me up. Most of the others dream of snakes, but us Sri Lankans dream of death.
Well, I don't dream of death.
I don't think I have ever dreamed of death.
But then again other than being born there, 72 long years ago, I am not your typical Sri Lankan. I left when I was still 13 -- way back in 1967. I grew up outside of Sri Lanka & didn't really visit that much. I last visited in 1992 -- for my mother's funeral.
So, I am NOT representative.
But, I can understand this obsession, albeit in dreams, with death.
It all has to do with Buddhism -- with ~76% of the population being Buddhist.
Per the Buddhism they follow 'life is suffering'!
We live to die & then be reincarnated.
Basically you are living to DIE and then repeat that cycle ad infinitum through reincarnation.
This is why I STOPPED being a Buddhist when I was around 18. I can't believe in that stuff -- especially that 'life is suffering'.
Thus their preoccupation with death. Crazy.
Another crazy thing. Sri Lankans, these days, appear to enjoy incredible longevity. They just don't seem to die.
I don't know MY biological family.
I was a (comical) hospital mix-up!
So, I (alas) ONLY know my adoptive family (with whom I share NO DNA). They seem to be IMMORTAL -- & I kid you NOT.

Check out what the countries dream out.
In Pakistan they dream about the dead. That kind of makes some sense.
