I was totally blown away. I was mesmerized, enchanted, edified & sated. WHAT A PLACE. I spend 8.5 hours (over 2 days) & I can't wait to go back. So much to see, so much to resee, so much more to explore, so much more to enjoy & so much MORE TO LEARN.
Yes, I am an unashamed museum buff. I love museums (& have since I was a child). I have been to museums all across the world -- Europe, Russia (yes, the 'Hermitage'), Asia, N. Africa & N. America. I have been to quite a few of the museums in New England. It is not unusual for me to spend a day at a museum. But of all the museums I have gone to (& I have to think we are talking in 60s or 70s), I can't remember enjoying one as much as I did the Shelburne.
Yes, it was like it was TAILOR MADE to me. A huge, beautiful steam engine, a real paddlesteamer, lots of paintings, amazing collection of CIRCUS stuff, Native Art. Wow. I couldn't have asked for anything better. [Yes, later on reflection, I realized that there was NO 'modern' art -- but then again, I am not that fussed about modern art.
Has to be the largest museum in New England.
I would contend that it is easily the BEST. Definitely the one with the most varied collection.
It should be a bucket list item -- definitely for those in the Northeast. It is very affordable & you definitely get value for money.
You should definitely check it out. You will be so glad I told you about it.
