I was six (or thereabouts) when my adoptive/accidental father educated me on our GLORIOUS (British) Commonwealth.
This would have been around 1959 & we are in Ceylon. It would have been 11 years after Independence (i.e., Feb. 4, 1948). THE QUEEN was the Head of State. We were very much part of that GLORIOUS Commonwealth.
I still remember this lesson! It was in the evening, around 6pm. Just getting dark. We, just my father & I, were in the car. The car was a black (German) 'Borgward' (no. plate 2 Sri 110). Whenever we were in the car together, on our own, my father would set out to teach me something -- of value. He was a born educator. At the time he probably was Asst. or Acting 'Secretary of Education' for Ceylon. He loved education. He devoted much of his life to education.
The Borgward did NOT have a radio. I often try to work out how my life would be different if that Borgward had a radio. In the absence of a radio we would TALK & sing in that car. When it was just the two of us it became a CLASSROOM.
That evening he decided that it was time for me to know about the Commonwealth. It is possible that it was Commonwealth Day that year. Not sure why he chose that topic, that day.
He was a good teacher. Gifted.
He started telling me about the Commonwealth. ALL the COUNTRIES that were part of it. I was TRANSFIXED. Wow. I belonged to this HUGE, magnificent family. I was SO PROUD.
I never lost my pride, appreciation & fondness for OUR GLORIOUS COMMONWEALTH.
I am proud to be part of that heritage and community.
Long Live our Glorious Commonwealth.
Yes, I am now a DUAL US-UK Citizen. So, I still belong.
