Yesterday's post with background.

So this is my first cut at a papabili 2025 list for the Next Pope after Francis.
It is per the criteria I spelled out yesterday.
The two 79 year olds MIGHT be deemed too old. But then again I have this nagging feeling that they might 'ask' Schönborn to step in as an interim, stop-gap president while Tagle gets a few more years older.
I still think that Tagle is still a tad young. Ditto Lacroix. Can't see the electors going ANY younger than that.
So, I have now played my cards.
OK?
I like the idea of Christoph Schonborn as compromise choice. I thought he might be someone the conclave would turn to the last time around. He is traditional and liberal enough to be acceptable to all factions and at 80 years, his papacy may not be as long tenured as Tagle's. He could provide the much needed clarification on a host of issues that Francis left vague and he is also enough of a shepherd. Tagle's election to the papacy would put an end to the influence of the conservatives led by Burke as he would continue to shape the college of Cardinals and the church in Francis' image. That might be something that gives a pause to his candidacy and opens the doors for someone like Schonborn.
