Unlike some I do NOT rule out the possibility of Pope Francis resigning -- & doing so soon.

That is why him calling for this CANONIZATION consistory (i.e., a consistory to announce Saints) so intriguing.

Benedict XVI, on February 11, 2013, resigned at a CANONIZATION consistory he had called.

He had had it all worked out. They had started working on his resignation 4-months earlier.

Francis, from hospital (into his 2nd week), calls for CANONIZATION consistory BUT does NOT set a date. That is interesting.

He can't set a date because he is still in hospital.

A consistory, by definition, is the pope sitting with some or most of his cardinals.

We don't know what type of consistory he has said he wanted. If it is but an 'ordinary' consistory only the cardinals present in Rome need to attend -- though all are invited.

If it is an 'extraordinary' one all FIT cardinals, available to travel, are expected to attend.

Benedict had asked for an ordinary consistory for Feb. 11 & for Feb. 28 (his last day). Most cardinals treated the Feb. 28 as extraordinary (which it was) an attended. It was their prerogative.

Interesting.

I still think that if Francis intends to resign he should do so tomorrow, Feb. 28.
